This is a structure that invites the viewer to experience a moment of introspection and consideration of our environment.
Passing through a condensed temporal segment, visitors to the Time Frames progress through a century of Earth warming, depicted by colours taken from Professor Ed Hawkins’ annual temperatures graph. The site is seen through this context and embodies an idyllic environment which is at risk of being lost. Confronted by blank canvas throughout the interior, visitors contemplate the fate of this environment whilst finding the best path through the folly. The light fluttering of canvas – a dialogue, stirred by the elements, between the site and the folly – brings an element of sound to the visitors’ journey, further connecting them to the site.
They walk upon timber deck flooring – a vernacular of New Zealand. This homely familiarity creates a more personal connection and enables the visitors to relate further to the folly. In this way, people’s engagement with the structure is heightened and, as such, their awareness of this modern issue.
